I recently wrote about I trip I took to Miami with a friend to visit her parents that lived in a gated community. They were nice and had a pool and I very much enjoyed myself while I was there. But something happened over the weekend that made me rethink the benefits of living in a gated community, and home security Miami all together. My friend called to tell me that her parent’s house had been broken into while they were visiting her brother in New York. She was telling me because I had expressed interest in her parent’s thoughts on Miami home security and they had told me then that they felt very safe in their community. Apparently, the guard had fallen asleep on duty and a couple of teenagers had slipped past him. The broke into very single house in the community and made off with a lot of money. The only way they were caught was when they tried to pawn some of the jewelry off at a policed watched pawn store. The teens were caught and the stolen goods returned. After her phone I got to thinking about how safe we think we are, when in reality we are all just as vulnerable as the next person. It’s really up to us to make our homes as safe as we can, and when we rely on others for that safety, we will, more often than not, be disappointed.

Florida police have reported that two teacup Yorkshire terriers are responsible for chasing a burglar out their owner’s home. Kenneth Jones was confronted by the two noisy dogs when he crept into Brenda Bofamy’s home on Monday morning.

Jones entered the home through an unlocked bathroom window while the homeowners were watching TV. He then proceeded to steal $10,000 worth of jewelry before Bofamy’s pets found him. She called the police while Jones fled her home. As police arrived they saw Jones running behind a building where he dropped the loot. Police were able to catch him, and he was taken into questioning where he denied any wrongdoing.

Unfortunately for Jones, police recovered the stolen jewelry behind the building and found a shoe print on the toilet seat in Bofamy’s home. Both link Jones to the burglary. He was arrested and charged with unarmed burglary and violation of his parole. Turns out, Jones has been previously arrested for burglary.

Luckily, Bofamy’s two terriers were on alert that morning. Many security system experts agree that having a dog is a great burglar deterrent. No matter their size, a barking dog can foil a burglary. Their noise attracts attention and that is exactly what burglars want to avoid.
